Bolton Station Interchange
Operated by Northern Railways, Bolton Interchange Station provides access for commuters travelling between the Manchester / Preston Line, running north to Blackburn & Clitheroe. The station provides access to other Manchester Stations, Manchester Airport, Rochdale, Stockport, Buxton, Chester, Preston, Blackpool, Barrow In Furness & Windemere.
As preparation for electrification works and part of a station refurbishment, a new footbridge has been constructed at the Orlando Street end of the station. The footbridge is designed to provide an emergency exit route off Platform 5 across the railway lines. The footbridge is normally closed to the general public and may only be accessed in the case of an emergency via gates controlled by an electromagnetic interlock system. In the case of an emergency the gates automatically open and the staircases and main span of the footbridge are illuminated by the use of Chromatica LED luminaries.
