Lucy Thomas Fountain
In 1906 the Robert & Lucy Thomas fountain was presented as a gift to the people of Merthyr from Sir W.T.Lewis. It was dedicated to the captains of industry, including his grandparents, Robert & Lucy Thomas. After an extensive renovation Chromatica were commissioned to illuminate the structure using a mixture of blue and white LED sources from the Compact range of LED floodlights. The low voltage installation is sympathetic to the physical structure of the historic monument, whilst providing an enhanced illuminated feature at night.
After an extensive renovation Chromatica were commissioned to illuminate the structure. FL150 compact floodlights utilising royal blue LED's were used to uplight the ornate cast iron dome structure, providing a strong contrast to the local ambient lighting, whilst emphasising the black and gold paintwork. In direct contrast, the water feature in the centre of the structure was illuminated via a cool white LED version of the same floodlight. Mounted directly above the water feature the narrow distribution floodlight provides strong modelling, localised to the waterspouts and collection bowl. Similar but smaller FL100 compact floodlights highlight the figurine on top of the dome.
All luminaries use remote control gear packs hidden behind the finials that adorn the top of the 8 support columns. This enabled a low voltage installation with minimal intrusion to the historic monument, connecting to the existing mains supply used by a previous system.
The complete project was installed and commissioned by Chromatica's installation team with kind assistance from Merthyr Tydfil CBC Street Lighting Department.
