Klondyke Footbridge

The new Klondyke Footbridge is a single span structure over the A189 spine road at Cramlington in Northumberland. To illuminate the bridge deck, Chromatica designed, manufactured and installed a total of 56 high flux LED luminaries to both sides of the bridge parapet railing. The complete installation may be dimmed up or down as deemed necessary, by the simple adjustment of a single rotary potentiometer.

The new Klondyke Footbridge is a single span structure over the A189 spine road at Cramlington. As a replacement to the original bridge, which was severely damaged by a vehicle accident during 2010, the new bridge provides improved access for pedestrians and cyclists between the High Pit Area of Cramlington and East Cramlington.

To illuminate the bridge deck, Chromatica designed, manufactured and installed a high flux LED luminaire system to both sides of the bridge parapet railing. Luminaires are mounted within slots cut into the galvanised steel handrail, to provide a near flush finish. Arranged in a staggered formation on both sides of the bridge, the installation provides a discreet, but effective lighting solution, which is encompassed within the fabric of the bridge construction rather than been seen as an addition to the finished project.

In addition to the LED luminaries a low voltage DC harness also runs through the hand rail sections, distributing power from the AC/DC power supply located inside a feeder pillar at the west end of the bridge.

Due to the discreet luminaire size, all of the necessary luminaire electronics are remote from the lighting fixtures, and form part of the LV harness system. By co-ordination with the bridge fabricator, Chromatica designed and installed the pre-assembled harnesses into the bridge structure. All of the necessary luminaire cabling exits the pre-cut luminaire slots in the correct locations, ready for fitment of the luminaries.

The handrail harness is supplied 29.0V DC by the AC/DC power supply. The harness electronics, which supply every LED luminaire, automatically compensate for voltage drop, thus ensuring each luminaire receives the correct forward voltage and current to ensure their reliable operation.

Each luminaire driver receives a signal via a separate signal harness. This provides a simple but effective dimming system, which allows the complete installation to be dimmed up or down as deemed necessary.

Luminaires are held within the rails by stainless steel retaining clips and screw fasteners.
