Lifelines

Conceived by former Turner Prize winner and UK Based artist Vong Phaophanit, the Life Lines project forms a focal point which links the seafront and the town centre of Southend.

Conceived by former Turner Prize winner and UK Based artist Vong Phaophanit, the Life Lines project forms a focal point which links the seafront and the town centre of Southend.

The 54.0M long piece of dynamic artwork consists of 6 channels of LED light, or "life lines", installed into a stainless steel support system flush with the finished ground level. Over the centre 9.0M of the artwork, 6 individual 1.8M high polycarbonate blades are installed. Each blade has a CNC etched "heartbeat" along its length, which is illuminated by the LED channels underneath.

A weather station is used to collect information on wind speed, barometric pressure, humidity, light, sound and movement, which via a data logger is processed by an onsite computer to continuously pulsate and colour change each life line.

This truly dynamic artwork utilises in excess of 100,000 LED's and 1024 DMX addresses to produce a feature that responds to the residents and visitors of Southend.
